Euro 2021| Hidden Gems That Could Catch The Eye Of Steve Clarke

We have compiled a list of players that have not yet been capped for Scotland and could possibly be flying under the radar of the Scotland boss Steve Clarke.

Our list is in no particular order, we have however decided to do a breakdown at the end of who we think is most likely to be called up and why.

Kevin Nisbet

Despite only recently moving to Hibernian from St Mirren the stirker has already made his mark at Hibs, with 13 goals and 3 assists to his name.

He currently sits as the second top goalscorer in the SPL behind only Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard who is ahead by two goals.

Birmingman City put in an offer of £3million pounds for the strikers services in January which was turned down by Hibs.

The Hibs striker plays in synergy with target man Christian Doidge. Nisbet can play from deep creating space for his strike partner or play incisive passes that cut open oppostion teams.

More importantly though he is lethal in the box and is a true goal scoring poacher.

Could Kevin Nisbet build up a similar partnership with current Tartan Army favourite Lyndon Dykes?

Ryan Gauld

It doesn’t feel that long ago since he was banging goals in for Dundee United. The media  labelled him as ‘Mini Messi’ and Sporting bought him for around £3million pounds. They then slapped a £48million pound buy out clause on him and expectations of him in Scotland were high to say the least.

At the time Gauld found himself surrounded by hype but when he got to Sporting he ended up spending alot of time on the bench and just wasn’t given the playing time to show what he could do.

Luckily for Scotland fans Gauld has been in phenomenal form recently for his current team S.C. Farense which has made clubs such as Celtic and Braga take notice of him.

His contract runs out in the summer so it looks quite likely that he will make a move elsewhere.

Since leaving Scotland for Portugal he has become alot better at winning possesion back and can play anywhere in midfield but is still most suited as an attacking midfielder.

He might not be the next Lionel Messi but I think if Steve Clarke gives him the chance he could light up the Euro’s this summer.

Aaron Hickey

Aaron Hickey made the switch from Hearts to Bologna in September 2020.

Bologna paid £1.5million pounds for his signature. He caught the eye of Bologna whilst playing for Hearts, He is a well rounded full back that can play in many different positions.

So far he’s only made 10 appearances for Bologna but he has made quite the impression on Bologna fans.

He is also remembered fondly by Hearts fans who will remember his late derby winning goal.

Could Hickey be the answer to Scotland’s right back problem?

Billy Gilmour

Despite only  playing 12 games for Chelsea in total he has made a massive impact amongst supporters and pundits alike. His man of the match awards in the games against Liverpool and Everton have definetly been stand out performances for him with pundits such as Roy Keane giving him plaudits.

The young midfielder is a quality passer of the ball and doesn’t mind getting stuck into tackles either.

It seems like its only a matter of time before he does break into the Scotland squad as his talent is evident.

Do you think he is ready to be called up?

Scott Wright

Wright is a forward that can play comfortably on either the left or right wing.

During his time at Aberdeen he has showed to be a great player with blistering pace, unfortunately for Aberdeen he decided not to sign a new deal with them and has recently just signed with Rangers.

Scott Wright has a habit of winning free kicks and has many other other attributes that could make him invaluable for Scotland.

Whilst he probably would struggle to get picked in the first eleven, he could make an impact from the bench.

Having a player that could be subbed on to help run down the clock and win some free kicks along with being able to use his speed to counter the opposition could make him a great asset.

Scott Wright has phenomenal pace and is able to use trickery to get past a defender. He also has the the ability to score goals and assist.

Could Scott Wright be Scotland’s super sub?

Who is most likely to be called up?

5.
Aaron Hickey

It might be surpising that Hickey is in 5th place but unfortunately his preferred position at the moment is left back. Since leaving Hearts he has only played as a left back for Bologna.

As much as i rate Hickey he just isn’t anywhere near Andrew Robertson or Kieran Tiernay’s level at the moment.

If picked in the future Steve Clarke will surely use him in a right back role as he has played well there in the past.

4.
Scott Wright

Scott Wright has played well for Aberdeen in recent times but will need to break into the Rangers team and establish himself their before Steve Clarke takes any notice of him.

He has until the end of the season to turn in some perfomances that can catch the eye of the Scotland head coach.

3.
Billy Gilmour

Billy Gilmour was making great progress under Frank Lampard before his injury, he has recently recovered from his injury but Lampard has now been sacked from Chelsea.

Time will tell if GIlmour can get any game time under new Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.

2.
Ryan Gauld

Gauld is arguably the most deserving on the list for a call up but he has difficult competition for a place with the likes of Stuart Armstrong, Ryan Christie and John Mcginn all able to play as attacking midfielders.

If Gauld can continue turning in great perfomance in the Primeira Liga he could well see himself being called up as a squad player.

1.
Kevin Nisbet

Kevin Nisbet looks to be the likeliest candidiate for a call up with previous Scotland strikers Leigh Griffiths and Steven Naismith seemingly not being the same players they once were.

Steve Clarke has also tried out Oli Mcburnie who has really struggled in a Scotland shirt and has only scored one goal for his club Sheffield United this season.

At the moment Lyndon Dykes will surely be a stick on to start and a player like Kevin Nisbet could compliment his play if Steve Clarke continues to play two up top.
